She was born on April 17, 1972
She measured 16.1 hands. 75 1/2 inches
around the girth and her weight was 1,125 pounds

She won at distances from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/2
miles with an average winning margin of 8 1/3 lengths.

Her combined margins of victory
totaled eighty-three lengths in just 10 races.

Ruffian's first race was later called
"The Greatest Race Ever Run by a First Time Starter" Claflin 51.

Ruffian set a record for six furlongs for
any two year-old in the histoiy of Saratoga,
where horses began running at the end of the Civil War.

In her match race with Foolish Pleasure the
public bet her favorite to win.

Jacinto Vasquez had the mount on
both Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure and
chose Ruffian to ride in the match race.

Ruffian never wore leg wraps till The Caltha Purse,
her 6th race. Her first race as a 3 year old.

Ruffian ran 10 complete races winning them all.
She was called ahead at every pole.

She was the 4th U.S. Triple Tiara Champion.
The Triple Tiara is the Triple Crown for Fillies.

In 1974 she was crowned the U.S. Champion 2-Year-Old Filly

The following year 1975 she was U.S. Champion
Filly as a 3 year old.

In 1976 she was induction into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame

Ruffian broke the The Sorority Stakes record going away,
dispite running with a painful popped splint.

Ruffian's victory in the prestigious Spinaway at
Saratoga in a time that was faster than the colts in the Hopeful.

Even after running 1 1/2 miles she would buck as she was
slowed down after the wire, and was playful on the walk
back to the barn.

Her match race with Foolish Pleasure is the last match
race horseracing has seen. It was a $350,000 purse.

In her Match Race with Foolish Pleasure
it took Jacinto fifty yards to pull her up after
she had shattered both sesamonds in her right ankle.

The day she was humanly put to rest the flags at
Belmont flew at half-mast. It was July 7, 1975.

Both of Ruffian's parent's, Reviewer and Shenanigans,
died due to broken legs within two years after her death.

The Ruffian Handicap, named in her memory, was won
four times by her regular jockey (Vasquez).
